Pedestrian Accident Lawyers in Broward County

Approximately 1 in 6 of the fatal pedestrian accidents in the United States occurs in Florida. The Sunshine State has an incredibly unique mixture of people: families, immigrants, retirees, and tourists all enjoy the outdoor weather year-round. This means that the number of people on sidewalks and streets is high, which in turn means the likelihood of pedestrian injury is also high.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) attempts to pinpoint what might be the cause of increased pedestrian fatalities:

  • The economic recession – people may be walking over driving in order to save money.
  • Changes in demographics – some individuals in increased pedestrian populations might be unfamiliar with the rules of the road.
  • Warmer weather patterns – the more nice weather, the more likely people are willing to walk.

Florida meets all three of these possibilities, making it one of the most dangerous states in the country for pedestrians:

  • According to the (GHSA), from January to June of 2013, at least 2,141 pedestrians died in accidents. This same year, four states accounted for 43% of those deaths: New York, California, Texas, and Florida.
  • In 2013, Florida had the second-most pedestrian deaths (following California), numbering 501 – 21% of the pedestrian fatalities for the entire U. S. this same year.
  • According to Transportation for America, Florida holds four of the deadliest metropolitan areas in the country for pedestrian accidents: Orlando, Tampa/St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, and Miami/Fort Lauderdale/Pompano Beach.
  • The overall number of traffic accidents has declined nationwide, but the number of pedestrian accidents has significantly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Pedestrian injuries were up 19% in 2010, and fatal pedestrian accidents were up nearly 5%.
  • In the last decade, nearly 50,000 pedestrians have been killed in accidents and more than 668,000 have been injured.

Broward Pedestrian Accidents: Free Consultation

Pedestrian accidents sadly are often serious or fatal. GMV Law Group is a Broward pedestrian accident Law Firm devoted to help clients and their families who have been harmed or killed. A significant part of our fight for our clients involves determining what caused the accident and who is responsible for the accident.

In nearly every circumstance, pedestrians have the right of way. But, through their failure to yield, motorists continue to cause accidents, injuring and even killing pedestrians who have the right to cross the street.

Imagine a huge jet crashing every month. That’s the amount of pedestrians killed in the U. S. each month, according to Transportation for America. Blame often lies with poorly designed roads or communities not designed with safety features such as sidewalks and proper signage.

Sadly, due to South Florida’s fast development, along with the significant population of elderly individuals, poor planning on the community’s part is often a cause for harm and even death for pedestrians.

South Florida Pedestrian Accident Statistics

  • Even more alarming is the number of significant injuries that same year: Broward (968), Miami-Dade (1,306), Orange (509), Palm Beach (550).
